With an educational background in English and Fine Arts, Chef Carl Thorne-Thomsen taught himself enough about cooking to land a kitchen job at a small gourmet cafe. There he met his future wife Susan, and after three years, the couple moved to Kansas City and started a family. Chef Carl worked as a line cook for 40 Sardines. In 2007, he became chef de cuisine at the Michael Smith Restaurant and Extra Virgin simultaneously for two years. In 2011, Chef Carl and Susan opened up story. in Prairie Village, KS.
