Friday the 13'th is rife with superstition, and so is a lot of food preparations. We'll pull out all the stops to assure your good luck this Friday the 13'th. Not only will we stick pins into onions, and leave them on the windowsill to keep away bad spirits (seriously), but we'll also cut crosses into our house baked bread to make sure the devil doesn't sit on them. We'll serve you long noodles to signify long life, and you'll even get to blow out a birthday candle and make a wish...

Menu detail

Garlic Potato Soup to Ward off the Dead, with Cross Loaves
Small Plate
One of my favorite comfort foods is a roasted garlic potato chowder with fresh baked bread. Fortunately, garlic wards off vampires and 'dead spirits,' and cutting a cross into your bread makes sure 'the devil doesn't sit on it.' In other words, our housemade wild yeast bread will rise nicely, and the garlic potato chowder will keep the other demons at bay. We'll add a nice dollop of arugula pesto on top of the soup, for no other reason than it tastes good, and makes us feel lucky.
Blackeye Pea Salad with Shaved Fennel, Chicories, and Oranges; for Luck and Love
Small Plate
Blackeyed peas signify good luck for the new year, hoping your 2017 is better than 2016. To this, we'll add thinly shaved fennel, pickled red onions, chicories, plenty of herbs, and orange segments. Rumor has it, giving someone an orange makes them fall in love with you. I don't except that kind of devotion, but do hope you'll fall in love with this bright, delicious, good luck salad. We'll even throw a dash of salt over our left shoulder to season your salad.
Long Bucatini with Tomato, Almond Parmesan, and Housemade Veggie Sausage Meatballs For a Long Life
Entree
In Chinese culture, long noodles signify a long life. If you cut your noodles, you wish a short end to your guests! We'd never do that to you, and so we'll prepare long bucatini pasta with a rich tomato sauce, our housemade veggie meatballs, and grate a generous amount of our (also housemade) cultured almond parmesan over the top. A lot of food historians believe the Chinese actually came up with pasta and tomato combo before the Italians! Either way, our dish will add 3 years to your life.
Birthday Cupcake, A Candle, and Your Wish
Dessert
The idea of 'birthday cakes' actually dates back to Roman culture. Somewhere along the way, the Germans added the candle, and 'the wish' became a real superstition. Now, I'm not sure how many people believe it. But if you wish hard enough, it might just happen for you. We'll make a delicious almond cake with preserved lemon frosting, and top it with a candle for you to grant yourself a new destiny.
