Mourad Lahlou came to the United States to study economics at San Francisco State University. Missing his native cuisine, he taught himself how to recreate his favorite Moroccan dishes which led him to open his award winning restaurant Aziza in 2001. He has also written a cookbook and opened his second restaurant Mourad in 2011.
