Pepper is one of the oldest known traded spices and so precious that it's historically referred to as "Black Gold" and was as good money. Peppercorns were stuffed in the nostrils of Pharaoh Ramesses II as part of the mummification process. After Rome's fall to create a pepper monopoly - Arabic spice traders created a legend stating pepper groves were guarded by poisonous serpents and could only be driven away by fire which burned the white fruit of the tree - leaving the peppercorns blackened. Pepper on!
