Nigel JonesNEW MAKER!

SoMa, San Francisco, CA, USA

Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Nigel’s love for cooking was sparked at an early age. Raised primarily by his grandmother, Nigel learned the traditional style of Jamaican cooking of marinating meats, slow roasting, simmering stews and baking puddings over a fire in the backyard. In November 2010, and alongside partner Adrian Henderson, Nigel opened Kingston 11 as a pop-up restaurant in North Berkeley’s Gourmet Ghetto. In 2013, the team expanded to a full service restaurant in Oakland’s Uptown district. Since opening, Kingston 11 has been recognized as one of Oakland’s most beloved restaurants, serving quality food and creative cocktails with an extensive rum collection and a lively social scene. A Michelin-recommended restaurant in 2015, Kingston 11 has received glowing reviews and accolades throughout the Bay Area. The restaurant has since become a local institution where Oakland’s black thought leaders and change-makers converge.

Nigel’s latest venture, Kaya, is a community-minded modern Jamaican restaurant in Mid-Market opened in partnership with Daniel Patterson and Alta Group. Nigel first met Daniel through his work with Restaurant Opportunities Center United (ROC), a national worker advocacy group that addresses racial equity in the industry and that both restauranteurs are a part of.
