For over 100 years, Chinese food for Christmas has been a tradition in the Jewish community in New York City. This tradition started when the Cantonese and Jewish immigrants were living in neighborhoods next to each other and bonded over being the 2 non Christian immigrants to the city. For many years, i have hosted a Chinese food for Christmas dinner on my underground restaurant series and am delighted to be able to host this again, after 2 years of covid hiatus.
All are welcome to this and in past years the communal table is filled with Jews, Hindus, Jains, Muslims, Atheists and even some Christians.
There will be a mix of Sichuan and Cantonese dishes in this family style menu

Wonton Soup

a classic soup of mushroom filled wontons and greens in savory broth
Spring rolls with spicy mustard
Appetizer
Cabbage, mushrooms and more will fill these egg rolls, fried up and served hot out of the fryer with a spicy mustard
Ma Po Tofu

a personal fave dish. Silken tofu braised in spicy sauce
Ah Choy with Garlic
Small Plate
Ah Choy (sometimes called Taiwan lettuce) stir fried with a LOT of garlic and fermented bean curd for a classic side dish of greens
Tofu with Black Bean Sauce

Fried tofu with snow peas, carrots, and onions in a black bean sauce
Dry Hot Noodles

Freshly made ramen noodles, rolled out in front of you in a 5 spice sesame sauce
Tempeh char siu

Handmade tempeh, made from fava beans with char siu sauce
