Homemade Hot Cross Buns

These sweet buns are perfect for any occasion and infinitely tastier than the store-bought version!

Ingredients

Homemade Hot Cross Buns

  • 1 cup milk (warm)
  • 4 1/2 teaspoon dry active yeast
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 4 large eggs
  • 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/3 cups raisins (or currants)
  • 1 large egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Pinch of salt

Glaze

  • 2 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Steps

  1. Place the milk in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment. Set to low speed and add the yeast, sugar, salt, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg and eggs.
  2. Add the flour 1 cup at a time, then mix for about 7-8 minutes, until the dough is smooth and forms around the dough hook. Add the raisins and mix until combined.
