- [Marko] I'm Marko. - [Alex] I'm Alex. And we're the Vagabrothers. - And we're the Vagabrothers. - [Alex] We love traveling and a little brotherly competition. - [Marko] So we're crossing the globe and putting our local trivia skills to the test, to see who's spending 24 hours living like a baller and who's pinching pennies. This is Basic Versus Baller. - This is Basic Versus Baller. - Welcome to Los Angeles, California. The city of angels, stars, and the place that we call home. - We've traveled all around the world, but today we're playing tourist in our own backyard. - In LA, avocado toast costs 15 dollars, but you can get a killer street taco for just a buck. So, there's something for everyone. - To find out who gets the blockbuster budget and who's riding the bus, it's time for a challenge! Greetings! We are not far from home. - We're not. This place is oddly familiar. - The thing is, that when you live in a city, you don't really explore it like a tourist does. - No, so that's why we proposed a staycation or sorts. - One of us will have the big bucks, and the other will just have a meager budget. So, to find out who that is, it's time for some competition! - There can only be one! - Doh! I would like to thank my family first and foremost. Everyone who's involved with this show, thank you. I'm gonna be gracious with my winnings. Brother, I hope you get by. You know the city pretty well. - Best supporting actor, yes. Alright, I'll take it. On a budget. - Alright. - May the best man have the best time. Let's be real, driving across LA is a mission! And I rarely leave my neighborhood. So, if I'm gonna get a hotel in LA, it might as well be on the east side. - Hello! - How's it going? - Welcome to Freehand. - Thank you. So, for accomodation I've chosen Freehand Hotel. This place is excellent. It's a historical hotel in downtown Los Angeles, and it's got a lot of cool things happening. So this used to be the commercial exchange building, it was built in 1924. It's Bo art style. It's very typical of downtown LA. A lot of these buildings were built in that time period. But it's really cool to see that they've taken this old building with historic bones, and turn it into something very new. - Here you go. - Sweet. - You're gonna be on 13th floor and elevator is down the hall. - Thank you very much. - You're very welcome. - Very nice. Mid century style furnishings. I always like a hotel with a living room. The bathroom looks awesome! This place has an old-school feel, but it's very, very modern. Overall, it looks very cozy. Let's go check on the bedroom. Ooh, very nice! Looking forward to slumbering here. A beautiful Japanese style bed. Very low to the ground. Excellent side-boards. Oh, and look at this right here! I've been gifted a Dirty Lemon Charcoal Water. What could get more LA than that? Ah! - Here I am, on a budget. In my own hometown. Staying in a six bedroom dorm, at a hostel less than a mile away from my own home. It's ironic, I know. But, I am embracing this staycation. This hostel in particular, it's really clean. It's extremely well located. It's only a few blocks from the beach. So, that being said, I'm gonna get out of here. Go explore my own hometown a little bit more. New perspective! New eyes! And, a new Santa Monica! Vamos. Depending on where you live, you may or may not be familiar with the electric scooter phenomenon. Here is Los Angeles, the bird flock has gotten so big that it's become nearly, an epidemic. But, that does not discount the fact that they're extremely fun, and a pretty budget friendly way to get around the city. Just be careful, ride respectfully, or you could be on the receiving end of somebody else's bird. - This place it too cool to enjoy by myself. So I've called my buddy, Josh. He lives right around the corner. He's gonna meet me at the rooftop cocktail bar. - Hi. - Oh, this looks good! - What do we have here? - What is this? - This is the Louisiana teapot Julep, and this is a little bit of a peach black tea. You can pour to your liking. Enjoy - Thank you. - You're welcome - Alright bro. - Are we balling out with a bottle right now? - This is equivalent to a bottle service. It's teapot service! - Cheers man - Yeah dude, this is sick. Oh, that's good! I'm in to it. - It's pretty good. - It's kind of like, a fancy version of a long island iced tea. Cheers, ballin' There we are. Ooh, yeah, that's nice! - What to do in Los Angeles when you're on a budget and it's the afternoon? Kale salad? No, too expensive. A smoothie, also too expensive! Yoga class, definitely too expensive. But guess what, this one's free! And, I get to do it with a lot of kittens. It's not a downward facing dog, oh no, it's a downward facing gato. Let's go! NKLA Pet Adoption Center. Free yoga class, surrounded with kittens. Uh, yes! - Take a deep inhale, sweep your arms up. Lift your gaze and then exhale. Bring your hands to heart center. Good, just welcome yourself into the space, letting it all go. Beautiful. So make sure your hands are directly underneath your shoulders, knees underneath your hips. And we are moving into cat cow, which is good. Inhale from the navel. Lift the gaze for your cow pose, and then exhale and dome the spine for your cat. Create some movement and some sound for the kittens. And exhale and forward fall. Namaste. - [Crowd] Namaste. - For dinner, I'm meeting my friend, Arden, at Rossoblu for an authentic Italian feast. Cheers. Good to be dining. - Yes, thank you for having me! - One of my favorite dinner companions. - I'm very excited. - Ooh. - Yes! - I see cheese, I see tomato, I see eggplant. Whoa! - Ooh! - I like that parmesan. - I like that this is thinly sliced. Like a carpaccio. - This restaurant is northern Italian food. I think the chef, his grandparents where from northern Italy, Bologna. - Oh, wow! - So far so good. - Yeah, absolutely. - Round two - I'm so excited! Oh, okay! Look at how amazing this looks. - I just wanna like, stare at it. Oh, whoa. What's happening in my mouth? - Game over. - This is so good! - I'm married to that flavor. - These mushrooms-- - This is handmade pasta? - They make everything in house here, and the recipes come from his grandma. Super good. That was delicious. I think for me, that dish was benissimo! - So if you're on a budget in Los Angeles, here's some things you need to know. There's tons of traffic. Uber's are kind of expensive, and you could only go so far on an electric scooter. So, I've head over here to the Expo line. Believe it or not, LA does have public transportation. So, I have a little bit of an urge I need to fill. I've gotta get some Mexican food and we all know that the best Mexican food goes down on the east side of LA. So I'm gonna hop on the Metro line and head over for some tacos. Food trucks! Long before you ate at a food truck, heard about a food truck, food trucks have been a thing here in Los Angeles for a very long time. This food truck opened in 2002, it's called Mariscos Jalisco. It is an award winning food truck with a specialization in seafood. I think I'm gonna have myself a Tacos De Camaron and some ceviche. That is my ceviche dance! Life does not need to be complicated. You just need a shrimp taco. Oh! Crispy, crunchy, salty, spicy, this passes all of my taco tests with flying colors. One of the best seafood tacos I've ever had. - Oh, what is this? - Oh my... I see roasted vegetables. - Cauliflower mash. Then we have the steak on top. - Oh my Gosh! - This looks really good. Whoa, it's like, just the right amount of fatty. It's like, very well marbled. But it's not like, that's really nice. - Oh, that's good! That meat is so tender. - Yeah, I think this is a really good food city. I think that LA is like-- - Absolutely. - So much cultural diversity here. - I think the thing that a lot of people forget is that LA as a whole, feels like a lot of different cities all put together. You know, going on the west side you've got something entirely different going on than you do here or in Korea town, you have so many different avenues to get really good food. And each has a really specific take on what is California culture, which I love. - LA is just a melting pot, and it's super good. I'm glad that you could come out and ball with me. - Yes, thank you so much! - Cheers to balling. - Yes. - So what is Alex having to do for budget then? - Braving LA traffic is much more fun when you have a sweet set of wheels. So I picked up this classic 1965 Mustang convertible to cruise the streets in style. First stop, breakfast. A lot of people associate LA with the film industry and Hollywood. But the film industry in the 1920's was really based here in Culver City. We're one block from the MGM lot, and this place, the Culver Hotel, actually hosted tons of actors over the years. From Clark Gabel, Mickey Rooney, and one hundred munchkins. - Hello, Marko. - Hello! - Welcome to the Culver Hotel. I'm the executive Chef of the Culver Hotel, what I got for you is a pork belly benedict. It's sitting on a bed of creamy truffle polenta, and a romesko holliadaise. - Thank you very much. - You're welcome. - This looks delicious. Polenta with truffle sauce? Please, I don't eat polenta without truffles. Decadent. Whoa, oh man, this is good. Look how thick that pork belly is. - Here we have an avocado toast, ricotta pesto, poached eggs, and a micro salad. Enjoy. - Thank you very much. - You're welcome. - Few dishes are as emblematic of LA as avocado to toast. I think if I had to paint a postcard of LA, it would be this. Let's get into it. Oh my God, this dish speaks to me. It says, "I will have alcohol for breakfast, feast on avocados like the garden of Eden that California is." - You may think that LA is home to the rich and famous and beautiful, but reality the vast majority of the city is made up of strip malls like this one. I'm gonna live it up, live dangerously, and stuff my face here at Donut King. I think I'm gonna do a cinnamon roll. - Cinnamon roll? - And then one of those donuts with the chocolate sauce and sprinkles. - Sure. - Can I also get a super green juice? - That's my favorite. - Yeah? - Thank you. - Sure. - You can't go wrong with just a classic sprinkle donut. Chocolate, sprinkles, I'm in. This drink, helps wash the guilt away. But this tastes way better. Duh, duh, duh, duh! I don't know about you, but I'm the type of guy who goes straight for the heart. Best part of the cinnamon roll is the gooey, chewy, cinnamony, heart. Ooh, Donut King, deserves it's crown. This is really good. Really, really, really good. - Welcome to Venice Beach. In the 1970's this was certainly a budget neighborhood. But now, Abbot Kinney is one of the most expensive retail streets in all of the country. This is where Bohemian meets boujee. There's tons of boutiques everywhere, and I'm gonna drop into Sabah House. A spot to pick up some uniquely baller, hand crafted kicks. I've wanted to buy a pair of these shoes for awhile, but today, I've got the budget to do so. I think they're perfect for travel. They're super well made too. - Yeah, they're well made. They're all hand made in Turkey. Our forman's from a family that's making shoes for a hundred and 20 years. It feels good moving shoes that you know, you can see the autograph of the guy who made them on the inside. Yeah, that's one of our shoe makers. - So we got the guy right here who made the shoe. I think these are cool. I like the neutral colors because they're more versatile. - Yeah, the true novelty of the shoe is that it is elegant but we really like it when people get on board and knock them around. We're a traveler shoe at heart. They build a lot of character, and they're really well made so they stay together. It's kinda cool. - I feel like this is the essence of style in LA. Where it's like, to be a baller in LA, you're really dressing casually, but it's well made and expensive. - That is it, that's true. - So should we try some of these on? - Let's do it. So I mean, it's all natural leather, you're gonna want it to squeeze your foot. It's something that's gonna stretch. Like these are a couple months old, and now it's nice and loose on me. The leather opens and breathes. Never smells, which is a great plus for a sockless shoe. - Definitely for me as well. - Yeah. - Those are sick too. What's the most popular color? - Probably the gray. I call that the gateway shoe. Just because it is a tumbled nubuck so it's really soft and buttery to begin with. We use a sheep's skin on the inside. - These are sick though. I mean, I feel like you could wear these to a nice restaurant. You could also wear these to the beach. Go to a party in them. Well I'm sold. I think I'm gonna get these blue ones here. These shoes are gonna be perfect for me to travel. - Alright ladies and gentlemen. I am now in Hollywood. I'm just off the world famous Sunset Boulevard, and I am heading to a Hollywood establishment. Amoeba Music. It's the world's largest independently owned music store. If you're looking for old vinyl, used CD's, DVD's, the merch, t-shirts, posters from your favorite band, it's the place to go. But it's also just a really awesome spot to do a little bit of perusing. To check out different songs, to find new artists, and to listen to music for free. I probably won't buy anything, but that's the beauty of Amoeba is that you can walk in and you can listen for free! - In LA, you're not ball until you hop into a private plane. So we're at the Hawthorne Airport. It's time to tap into my inner Howard Hughes. Gonna go up in the sky with this guy. Hey, how's it going? - Good, good. - I'm Marko. - Hey Marko, I'm Henry. We're gonna take you today on a flight down the beautiful California coastline in one of these guys. - This thing looks pretty cool. Looks like a hang glider combines with a miniature airplane. Let's do it. - Cool. All good? - All good. - Okay. Okay, so we're gonna hop on the runway. We're gonna fly out to the beach, which is out there. - Okay. - Once we're out there, I'm gonna give you some steering if you want. - Sure! - Up we go! - Whoa, we're off! Wow, that was fast! This is amazing. It's like a convertible, but for an airplane. - Alright we are one thousand feet above the ground already. It is a little weird being here with nothing around you though, huh? - Yeah, I'm trying not to look down. I do have a fear of heights. I hadn't really considered we were coming up to this. - We are two thousand feet above the ground. - Wow. - Alright, so it's time for you to learn how to fly. - Uh oh. - I'm gonna have you reach up, grab the handles there. - Alright. - So, what we're gonna do, we're gonna make a left turn. So you wanna push out to the right a little bit. Here we go. - Oh my God, it's so scary! What are you doing, giving me control of this thing? - I just gonna take a little nap up here. - Oh, we're under good control. - You are doing good. - Check out the waves! Not bad. You're not anywhere near as high as you'd be in an airplane. At this height, I think is actually the most unique perspective. - Yes, I agree. It's pretty awesome. - And the ocean is beautiful from up top. - Alright, do you wanna see a little roller coaster action? - Alright. Oh my God! - LA is so big. - It's a gigantic city and you really don't appreciate how big LA is until you're up here. And you pass traffic. Woo-hoo! - You did it! - That was a cool experience. It was like a convertible, but in the air. I got to fly a little bit. It was very, very cool. After concurring my fear of heights, I decided to treat Alex to another of LA's thrill seeking activities from high above the city. Well brother, I invited you here because I know that you really like heights. And so we're at the top of the highest building in Los Angeles one thousand feet up on the 70th floor. - We're here because there's a slide. A glass slide. - This slide is gonna go down a full story. 45 feet, suspended above the city. If you look down you'll be able to see the entire city below you. I get vertigo. I really hate heights, so this is more for you than me. - I think that I will owe you after we do the OUE Sky Slide. I have a good feeling about it. - I think that there's only one direction to go, and that is up this little staircase. And down that slide. - And then down. - Well then, that's actually two directions. - Just go. - Just go with it? - Let's roll. - Oh my God, that's a long way down. - Woo! - What an adrenaline rush. After sliding down to earth, Marko invited me to check out his wheels and go for a ride. The Pacific Coast highway is one of California's most iconic treasures. Stretching nearly the entire length of the golden state. - You can cruise along the ocean, wind in your hair, sun on your face, so what better way to end the trip than with the drive along the coast to do one of our favorite things. Catch some waves. - I've got some high end and some low end boards, so whatever you guys want, let me know. - One of each. - One of each? - Yeah. - Alright, let me show you the high end boards, my own personal boards. Special, nice. This one here, foamy. There you go, bro. - Awesome. - Hey so, I would just go straight out. There's a nice little sandbar right there. A couple little killers. Have a good time, guys. - Alright, cheers. - Thank you. - Growing up near the ocean in California, surfing is basically a right of passage. Whether on a budget or balling out, it's a great way to enjoy California's natural beautiful while being active. Surf's up! For being our hometown, I feel like we've experienced it in a completely new light. - You can see a different side, and have a completely different experience than your day to day life. - Totally. I think heading out east, trying Mariscos Jalisco, there's so many different food trucks in LA. That one was definitely of legendary status. How about for you? - The experience of going up in a Micro Light was really cool. Got to see LA from a totally different perspective. It really felt like there was no barrier between you and the ground below you. - Wow, dude. Driving down the PCH in the mustang, and just kinda experience that quintessential California charm, doing that together in a convertible, that was super awesome. Definitely a priceless experience. - Hard to beat that. - As always, Los Angeles has been fun, but it's time to catch a flight. - We're not far from LAX, we'll fly to the next destination. Let's go!
