Sweet Potato Jamaican Patties

  • For the Patties:
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 stick of cold butter, cut into cubes
  • ½ cup shortening
  • ½ cup + 2 tablespoons of ice cold water
  • 1 egg yolk, for egg wash
  • Salsa Verde, for serving, recipe below
  • For the Filling:
  • Pulp of 2 large baked sweet potatoes at room temp
  • ⅛ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Salsa Verde

  • 4 garlic cloves, roasted
  • ½ yellow onion, roasted
  • ¾ bunch cilantro, stems and leaves
  • ½ bunch parsley, leaves
  • 2 jalapeños, most of the seeds removed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • ¾ cup olive oil


Sweet Potato Jamaican Patties

  1. Add the flour, salt, sugar, turmeric, cold butter cubes and shortening to a blender, and pulse until it resembles crumbs.
  2. Slowly add the cold water until the dough forms.
  3. Place the dough onto a floured board and mold into a disc.
  4. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour or overnight.
  5. Preheat the oven to 400F.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out pastry and cut into circles about 6 to 7 inches in diameter.
  7. Mix together all filling ingredients and spoon 1 tablespoon of sweet potato filling into the center of the pastry. Fold over and seal the edges with a fork and place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Lightly brush the top of the pastry and around the edges with beaten egg yolk, and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Serve immediately with the salsa verde.

Salsa Verde

  1. Add all the ingredients, minus the olive oil, into a blender and blend on medium speed.
  2. While it’s blending, slowly add in the olive oil.
  3. Adjust seasonings to desired taste.
  4. Store in the fridge in a tightly covered container until ready to use.
  5. Can be saved for up to 4 days.
