- [Megan] Hi, I'm Megan Mitchell, and I'm here to revamp renter spaces. So much of the time we're too scared to make changes to our rental, thinking it's not our space. But I'm here to show you how to transform a space without putting the security deposit in jeopardy. With a few creative tricks up my sleeve, and some cost-effective hacks, I'm going to help personalize their living spaces from a place they live, to a home they love. This is Safe Deposit. We've all had that issue where we don't have enough functional space but we're stuck in a rental. So what are you gonna do? Hannah and Jessie are here in that exact situation, so I'm gonna go meet up with them and figure it out. - Hello. I'm Megan. - [Jessie] Jessie. Nice to meet you. - [Hannah] Hi, Hannah. Nice to meet you. - [Megan] Nice to meet you! - [Jessie] Come on in! - [Megan] All right, ladies, so tell me. What is going on? - [Jessie] So, I'm an artist. And I really love to have people kind of be able to look and move around. - [Hannah] We don't really have a space where we can really have people over comfortably. - [Megan] Okay. Let's start small. - [Jessie] Okay. - Tell me about this here piece. - It comes from a previous relationship, and they just really wanted a picnic table for a dining table. It's our only table. It's the only place that we have to sit. - I like that there's no back on it. - Right. - And there's only one - I wanna come and just sit for a couple hours and just hang - [Jessie] and eat dinner, yeah. Your butt will not feel good after about five minutes. - Okay, so this isn't great for entertaining, is what you're saying. - Yeah, we just don't have a functional space, and this I feel like this takes up so much. - And I'm looking at your cabinets back here - [Jessie] It's just bags and junk. - [Megan] So that's under-utilized. - Mhm. - Okay and what about the space over here? - [Jessie] This space we've had it in every different form you can possibly think of. It's just not functional. - I like it because you face the corner of the room and you get to check that guy out over there, I mean-- - [Jessie] Sloth! I mean, yeah! He's our only pet! - I think we would really love to have a dining room space. Something that we can, you know, really entertain. - So it could be all nice and sexy, you could have your art, - Mhm you could have a table, I mean, there's a lot of potential here that we could do. And then I also see over here that we have a desk situation? - Yeah. - It's basically our only office space that we have in the house. - [Megan] So you're bringing a chair over every time? - Absolutely. - Okay. So I think I have an idea of what you both want this space to be. So I'm gonna go work up some ideas and do some plans and then I'll come back and we will DIY together. - Are you excited? - I'm so excited. - I'll be back. I promise. - [Hannah] Me and Jessie have been friends for about three years. We met through a mutual friend of ours, and we just kind of been super tight ever since. - Since we're renters it's been challenging to have kind of a space that's not super-flowy? And I am really excited that Megan decided to come in and change that whole weird dining area because it really needs some work. - We're not creative people in that way so for us it's going to be a really nice surprise. - [Megan] We'll start by getting rid of a few items to open up the space. We're gonna say goodbye to the corner chair and then repurpose the picnic table into a free-standing bar perfect for entertaining. By removing the cabinet doors we'll create an open wine storage area. I'm moving some pieces around and installing affordable and easy-to-remove picture lights to feature Jessie's artwork more prominently. We're gonna donate their couch and add an amazing used dining table in the center of the room along with thrift store found chairs perfect for dinner parties. I'm also adding a creative piece of furniture that will help keep the computer out of the way and space de-cluttered. Hello - Hi - I'm just letting myself in. Are you guys okay with that? - [Jessie] Please. Come on in. - Yeah. - All right. I've been shopping. I got a couple things. Are you guys ready to DIY? - [Jessie] Yes. - All right. I'm gonna tell you my first idea. We're not getting rid of this. - Oh. - I thought about turning it into a bar. - Yes. - Ooh! - Right? Okay. So, we will take the legs off of this bench we're sitting on. - [Hannah] Okay. - We'll drill some holes, and it'll be a floating shelf underneath. - And then, to go with the theme of the bar situation, we're gonna turn that cabinet over there into a wine storage. - [Jessie] Ooh, yes! - We're gonna take the doors off, because, at the end of the day, you can put them back on, so we're not doing anything that's gonna mess with your deposit. - Right. - All right, so, why don't you finish up and then we can start on this baby? - All right. - Yeah! Let's do it! - Yeah? So we're gonna take this screw-gun-- and we're gonna take off the legs from this bench. All right so I'm gonna go in, make sure I really get there and try not Wanna give it a shot? - Sure! - [Megan] There we go. Whoo! - Okay! - Yeah! - [Megan] All right, so, once we remove all these screws, we are going to drill holes into the top, and then also drill holes into the sides of the bench, and then-- - [Hannah] --Ah! - [Megan] --Suspend a rope through, and that will be our hanging shelf, for your bar. - Ooh, cool. - Thanks for joining me in the corner. - You're welcome. - All right. Your cabinets. So what we're gonna do is you can use an electric screwdriver or just a handy-dandy one, but we're gonna take the hinges off of your doors, and then we'll put them somewhere safe so they don't get scratched or nicked or anything, and then when you're ready to move out, you can just put them right back on. So you get to change the look of your cabinets without any construction. Teamwork. Put the screws in a resealable bag, and then just tape it to the back of the cabinets so you don't lose it. - [Jessie] Yeah. - [Megan] And you can use painter's tape so it comes off easy. An easy fix for, you know, changing it up in your kitchen. - I like it. - Cool. All right, we've converted your pic bench and table into a bar and then we turned your cabinet into wine storage. - Yeah. - And I have a few more tricks up my sleeve - [Jessie] Okay? - So I need you to leave so I can finish it. - Okay. - Oh, okay, cool. - Get, get! But come back! - [Jessie] Okay! - [Megan] In Hannah and Jessie's house, we repurposed their picnic table in order to make it a free-standing bar. Attaching the bench to the picnic table with rope created a new floating shelf. Keeping budget in mind, I found a used dining room table along with some super-cute chairs. We moved some of Jessie's artwork and in order to feature it more prominently we installed a picture light. I also wanted to surprise them with a classic armoire that could double as a hidden home office so when they're entertaining it can be tucked away. It's nice because the wood tones match the color of the cabinets. - Yes? - Hi! - You guys are gonna have to come back, I'm having a rager in here. - Okay. - Okay, You're like, "Can I join?" You guys excited? - Yes! - Okay. I'm sneaking up behind you because I want you to close your eyes. - Okay. - Slowly, okay. Don't, don't do it. - Okay. - Okay. - Do it. - Oh my God! It doesn't even look like the same room! - [Hannah] I can sit down for dinner! - [Jessie] Aww, you guys! This is so beautiful! - You guys can have family dinners! - I love this! - And your art. - [Jessie] Oh, my ... - [Megan] You have a light on it. - This is precious! I love it. - [Megan] And that's just stuck on so you're so no holes or anything like that. It just comes off so you don't have to worry about it. Your chair is gone. - [Jessie] Yes! - But the sloth will come back. - [Hannah] Okay. Okay, so this is a new piece. So this is for your desk. So now it's all hidden behind, I'm gonna pull it out. - [Jessie] Oh my goodness. - You don't see the cords, you don't see any of that stuff. All right, let's check out your bar area. - [Hannah] Hey. - [Jessie] Do it. - What do we think? - [Jessie] I love this. - [Megan] This used to be a picnic table. - Yeah. - [Megan] So remember, we took off the legs, drilled the holes, and now it's suspended but it's still stable. Then your wine, our project together. So all the wine is down there, some extra glasses, And the best part about all these changes we did: you get your safety deposit back. - I'm so happy. - Do you like it? - Yeah. - Okay, can we start drinking? - Yes. - I didn't really think there was going to be much of a transformation, But it's totally different than now. - [Jessie] I think it's really cool that we were able to have this opportunity because we can take everything with us and everything is un-doable. We can get our security deposit back and I think that's really awesome. - [Megan] Let's christen this bar. - [Hannah] Yeah! - [Megan] Woo! - Cheers! To your finished place! - [Jessie] Thanks Megan! - Bye! - No wait, I do have. - See ya later. - Bye. - [Megan] You're welcome!
