- [Megan] Hi, I'm Megan Mitchell, and I'm here to show renters how to transform their space without putting their security deposit in jeopardy. With a few creative tricks up my sleeve, and some cost-effective hacks, I'm going to help personalize the rentals from a place they live to a home they love. This is Safe Deposit. It's the dream to work from home, right? But only if you've got the space. Today we're meeting Molly and JC who are facing that exact dilemna. Let's go meet 'em and see what's going on. [knocks] - [JC] Hi! - [Megan] Hello! I'm Megan. - I'm Molly. - JC. Nice to meet you guys. - Come on in. - I'm excited to see! This is so cute! - So this is it, this is our tiny little place. - I love it. - [Molly] We've been here for a year, and just about a year ago also we opened up a VR production company. We have too much stuff, and as the company grows we have hard drives, paperwork, notebooks... It's hard at the end of the day when you're done working when that's just everywhere, to feel like you're leaving your job. - It's like, out, you think of it again. - And then you almost feel like you're always working? - Yes. It just gets, you're right on top of each other. And if you're gonna live together, and you're gonna work together, you've gotta give yourself as many opportunities to... God bless you both for doing that. To not kill each other. - Right. So, separation of spaces. - Organization, storage. I see little pops of color here and there. You guys like color? - Yeah, we have to have a space that has personality. - You don't own it, but you rent it, and you love it, and we're gonna make the space work, which hopefully you guys will help me with. - Yeah. - And I will be back! - Cool! - Cool! - With colors, and organization, and cool stuff you don't even know about. - [Molly] Yeah! - [Megan] I'll see you guys soon. - Yes! I met JC about two years ago, and we both work in film. We worked on one project together and we developed the whole idea, and we got to the day before we were gonna shoot and it kinda all fell apart. But we had such a good time, and so we started working on more projects together, and things just sort of evolved. JC and I have a pretty shared aesthetic. We like really strong furniture, like a lot of wood and kinda neutral tones with pops of, like, prints, and bright colors and bold, weird kinda things. But something I know that I take it a little too far, and he'll say 'not that much pink', but I win, a lot of the time, so... [laughs] When we first moved in, we hadn't really started our company yet so it was totally fine for just two people living. But living, working, trying to manage paperwork, it's just, it's too small. - It's very difficult at times to sort of step away from work and live a normal life. And so to have a little bit of that separation would be awesome. - [Megan] To organize Molly and JC's workspace, I'm gonna bring in shelves and add a pop of color with some DIY panels. These will attach to the shelves and keep equipment out of sight when they're ready to unwind. I'm gonna donate their small shared desk and replace it with two matching desks on casters. The casters will make it easy to move the desks around so they can be repurposed for extra table space. Finally, I'm gonna rearrange their furniture and add a touch of greenery to open up the space and make it flow better. [Bouncy Music] - Hello. Hey. - Am I interrupting? - No, not at all. - I'm just bringing in a large plant. - [Molly] Yeah! - Your door was unlocked, you might want to look into that. [Laughs] So I have some ideas. - Okay. - I am gonna bring in some bookshelves, so we can put all of your guys's stuff in there. And then, I made these cool panels. We'll make a couple together with different fabrics that bring in the pinks and the greens and a lot of colors from your chair. - Yeah, that's awesome. - Okay, are you guys ready to help me do some DIY? - [Molly] Yeah, let's do it. - You clearly look ready. - [Molly] JC has been waiting. He thought you'd never ask. - I was born ready. [laughs] - All right, guys. - All right. - DIY. - With pink! - Oh, it's so pink! - It's so pretty, right? - This is artisan paper. - It's almost like fabric, it doesn't feel... - [JC] Oh wow. - So I cut this to fit this piece of foam core. So the bookshelves, this will end up hanging in front, so you can lift them up, so everything's hidden behind them, right? - [JC] That's super awesome. - Yes! - [Megan] JC, you are going to spray. - Okay! Super nervous. Here we go. - You have the overalls on, so I feel like this is your job. Look at that wrist movement! - Is that enough, or should I do more? - Yeah, no, that should be good. Okay, and then we'll just push it down. And then I'm gonna have you, Molly, help me. This is double sided tape. Follow this line with the tape. With fabric, you want to pull it on the edges so it's taut. So then we'll just continue to do it on that side. - You want to do this one? And while you're doing that... - Sure, let's try this. - Let's see your taping skills. - Because this is fabric, it's a little more forgiving, and, as long as it looks good on this side, right? Woo hoo! - Yeah! - [Megan] You know, if you don't like it, then you just buy another piece of foam core, or do another, like, you want to switch it out? Switch it out! - Yeah. - [Megan] So you're not stuck with it. So I have these little hooks, which is what will secure it to the cabinet. - Okay. - And these will go into the actual bookshelves, so then they loop in, right? - Got it. - So then you can just... - Wow, it's so easy. - So you want to make sure where you put these on the bookshelves, these match. So let's measure an inch in on either side. - It's so easy! - Right? - So I'm gonna finish up a couple more of these. - Okay. - But I need you guys to leave. - I've got surprises for you, and I don't want you to see. - Okay. - All right, so I'll see you. [upbeat guitar music] - When assembling a build-your-own furniture project, it's easy to get lost in the order of how to put things together. But if you go step by step following the directions, you can knock out any project, no problem. In Molly and JC's space, we really needed to hide their important VR and film production gear. So, when the day is done, they can relax. We found these well built laminate shelves. And by adding some colorful panels, we turned them into DIY cabinets. I thought it would be super fun to give them matching desks. Because they're on casters, they can roll against the bookcases, and be repurposed for extra table space. I reconfigured their furniture to make the space flow better and I added greenery to bring in some calming organic elements that will bring peace of mind after a long work day. - You ready? - I'm ready! I'm nervous. - All right. - Let's see how this goes. [knocks] - Hello! - Hey! - I'm gonna sneak out, don't look, don't look! - Okay! - Okay, I've been working hard. - Yes! - I have so much to show up guys. I also took a shower, took a nap in your bed. - That's fine! - Okay great. Whatever you need. - Made yourself at home? - So close your eyes, I'm gonna come behind you, I'm gonna guide you both in. No peeking. Okay, I'm gonna open the door. - No peeking! Carefully, carefully. Okay, stop Don't open, don't open. Okay, imagine everything and anything. [laughs] All right, open your eyes! - Wow! - Holy crap! - Wow! - This is insane. - Look at these! - Yeah, these are so rad! - So remember we made this one together? - Yeah, yeah! - And this is space under there. But I want to show you. Now it's easier for you to find. And you can tuck it away so you're not looking at it all the time and thinking about work. - This is so awesome. - It's really gonna change everything. - Yeah. - So you get all of this storage and organization, we didn't have to add a wall to do the separation. - I mean, I never thought that we could have a result like this. - Your couch, the way it's facing, you're not looking at your workspace all the time. So you can cut it off that way. - It feels so much open, too, like even for people coming in it feels more inviting. - It's like you guys in a house! It's light and happy and artistic and creative. - [Molly] Totally. - And now just more functional. - [Molly] Thank you so much! - This is amazing. - And the best part is, you know, when you guys move you can take this stuff with you. And you're not gonna get in trouble with your landlord. - And these are like the coolest bookshelves, they're so... - They look like built-in pieces. - And they're, like, asymmetrical, and it's beautiful! - Yay. - I'm so happy. - You guys like it! - I tried so many ways to picture it, but never like this, and like, it's just amazing. The room feels huge. - [JC] For me, actually, the most unexpected thing was how so much space was created. - I love that we now have that space here, where we can kinda separate if we need to, if we're laying out storyboards or something, and we want to be able to have, like, a bigger table. Or if we're having people over for dinner, it gives the space a functionality that just didn't exist before. - [JC] And it kinda makes the room more mobile. - It works so well. I'm ready to relax. - Yeah. - Watch some TV. - I hope you like it. - Yes! - Bring it in. - You've changed our lives. [laughs] - Ah, god bless you both! - It's beautiful. - You've gonna change lives! - Yay, thank you! - Enjoy, you guys. [bouncy music]
