Roomies Lauren and Kylie have been in their apartment for so long, they’re unsure of how to decorate it to match their trendy and grown-up aesthetic. Thankfully, Megan Mitchell knows a trick or two on how to upgrade their worn out leather couches and give their empty space some much-needed wall art — no expensive Monet’s or drilling required. With the help of some DIY subway tiles and cozy touches, Megan surprises the girls with an apartment that finally feels like home.

- [Voiceover] Hi, I'm Megan Mitchell, and I'm here to show renters how to transform their space without putting their security deposit in jeopardy. With a few creative tricks up my sleeve, and some cost-effective hacks, I'm going to help personalize their rentals from a place they live to a home they love. This is Safe Deposit. A common problem with rentals is that you can't put holes in the walls. If you do, you're gonna spend a ton of time patching and painting. For Lauren and Kylee, they've never made their space feel exactly how they want, because they don't know what to do. I'm gonna go get my eyes on it, 'cause I think I've got some ideas. Hello. - [Lauren And Kylee] Hi! - I'm Lauren. - Megan. - Nice to meet you. - I'm Kylee, nice to meet you. - Nice to meet you. - Come on in. - [Megan] Thank you. I'm excited. - [Lauren] So, we've been here awhile. We haven't made too many upgrades in all of that time, it's kind of stayed pretty much the same. - [Megan] Tell me about your couches, they look comfy. - [Lauren] Okay, yeah. They're nice, fake leather, and you can kinda see they're starting to peal over there. - [Megan] Yes, I see a little tear here. - [Lauren] Mhm. So, that happened really bad on this couch, 'cause we always sit on this couch. There's a secret under this blanket. Alright, don't judge. - [Megan] I'm not gonna judge you at all. - [Lauren] Really beautiful. - [Megan] Do you guys sit on that? - [Lauren] We put this down, and it's like it's totally fine. It's like nothing is under there. - Can't even tell. What happened? - [Lauren] Um, I watched some YouTube videos, and they made it look really easy. I was like, great, I can just peal this off, and do some leather paint. - She tried, and it was a valiant effort, but it just didn't really turn out how we hoped it would. - [Megan] Tell me about this wall. Is it someone's birthday, but then also Christmas? - She's a really thoughtful roommate, and kind of added this piece to celebrate my birthday as a surprise, and I loved it so much that we literally never took it down. - Would you maybe want something else to go up here? - [Lauren] I wouldn't be upset if this left. - And then I see you guys have a bar cart over here? - [Lauren] We got some booze. We don't know how to properly fashion this situation. - If we were able to organize it better in a way where it's actually nice looking, that would be great. It's obviously very random right now. - Visually appealing. Let's sit down and talk about what you see the space being. - [Kylee] Anything that you have to suggest, I'm super open minded, I think Lauren is as well, so. - Bring a little more style in here, because I feel like you guys have that, it's just not really shown. This TV situation reminds me of every college dorm room. Maybe we don't need to see all the cords. So, we can hide that. Alright, I'm gonna go shopping. I'm gonna find some stuff, and then I'm gonna come back with a DIY project that we're gonna do together. - Yay. - Cool. - Alright, I'm gonna let myself out, and I'll see you guys in a little bit. - Okay. - Thank you. - [Megan] Thank you! - So, me and Lauren met in college, and we've been living together now for almost three years. - I think renting a place makes it really difficult to change your apartment with you, and have it evolve with you. We don't want to spend all this money if we don't know where we're gonna be next. So, I think that kind of prevents us from getting a lot of things done. - We definitely are hoping to be able to make it feel a little bit more upgraded, and homey now that we've been there for a little while. - [Megan] Because Kylee and Lauren want to add style to their living room, I'm surprising the girls by replacing their TV cart with a media cabinet that will provide additional storage, and allow them to neatly tuck away any TV wires. I'm adding wood-stained panels to the wall behind their TV to bring in an element of art and design. To increase the lifetime of their couch, I'm gonna use an ivory slip cover to hide away any damage. Finally, I'm gonna remove the back of the small couch, transforming it into a modern chaise lounge. - [On Phone] Hello? - Lauren, and Kylee? - [On Phone] Hi! - Hi, it's Megan, are you guys ready? I have some DIY projects outside. You ready to help me out? - [On Phone] Yes, we are ready to go. - Alright, come on down. - [On Phone] Bye! - Bye. Hello, ladies. - Hi. - Hi. - Welcome to our DIY. - Yay. - I'm nervous. - Step into my office. No, no, no! It's gonna be so easy, and so fun. Alright, the best part is, I have gloves for us. So, let's put these on, because I just feel like we should all be wearing these while I'm explaining what's happening, because why not, right? Alright, and the reason we have these on is we're gonna be using wood stain, and we don't wanna stain our hands. The wall where your TV is, we're gonna put a bunch of these up, so they act like large subway tiles. One, it'll anchor that side, and then it'll just frame your TV, organic. We have fine sandpaper, and we just wanna sand the edges, any rough edges, and you can see the grain goes this way, yeah? So, I'm gonna put some stain on this pad, right? And then I'm gonna give you this. So, once I put it on, you just kinda wipe it off. 'Cause the longer the stain sits on this plywood, the darker it'll get, because it'll just keep setting on it. - Okay. - Got it. - [Megan] And then, alright, go. Wipe it, girl, wipe it. With purpose, get in there. - Did I mess it up already? - No! - It looks great. - Do you wanna try? - Yeah, you should do it. - Here, I'll put some on. - [Lauren] My heart is, like, racing a little bit. - [Megan] Listen, you know what? If it all goes... This is it, ladies. - This is pretty fun. - [Megan] It is. And then you can look up, and you're like, I made that. It looks really cool. - [Lauren] Sense of accomplishment. - [Megan] Yeah, and it feels more personal. I mean, this looks pretty dope, right? - Yeah. - I think so. - [Megan] So, since you really can't, I mean you can, I guess, drill holes into your walls, but if you're a renter, then you have to patch it, and paint it, and it's such a pain. And sometimes that keeps you from hanging stuff up, because you're like, I don't know what to do. So, I have these industrial velcro strips, which you can buy, I don't know, I feel like you can find them everywhere. So, you wanna put them on the back around the edges, so they stick, and then in the middle. So, you take this, and you just gently line it up, and press it in. You don't want to press it in too much, but just enough for it to stick. So, that's enough. So, then we'll unstick all of these, and push it on, and then when we push it on the wall, that's when it'll lock in. So, I have a couple more panels to do. And, by a couple, I mean a lot. And I want to have some surprises for you guys, and I'm gonna put everything together. So, I'm gonna tell you to leave. - Okay. - Okay. - And you can come back in a little while, I'll let you know. And then I'll have a big surprise, and the big reveal. - Yay, sounds good. - We trust you. - [Megan] Okay, good. Go eat, and drink, and I don't know. Go to the beach, or something. Do something cool. I'm gonna be here getting high on fumes. Kylee, and Lauren share a common renter's problem. They've got a big wall that needs some style, and they can't quite figure out what to do. By taking some simple luan wall panels, gently sanding them, and adding some stain, we can stick them to the wall with removable hanging strips. Laying the panels out in a cool pattern can dramatically change the look and feel of any space. Sometimes, a sad couch is beyond repair, but, with a stylish slip cover, you can get a few more miles out of a piece of furniture that would otherwise be expensive to replace. Finally, just by decluttering, you can dramatically change the look and feel of any space. - [Megan] Hello. Okay, close your eyes. I'm gonna come out real quick, I don't want you do see anything. Okay, you can open them. Are you excited, are you nervous? - I'm a little nervous, but I'm really excited. - Yeah, same. - Okay, I've been working hard. It looks amazing. It smells delicious in there. So, alright, I'm gonna show you guys in, but close your eyes, move forward, come closer to the door. Close your eyes, if you want, you can cover your eyes, and then you can kinda look down so you don't trip, but no peaking up. Alright, carefully walk in. Walk in a little bit. Walk in a little bit. Baby step, baby step. Okay, stay there. I'm gonna move, and then I'm gonna count you down. - [Lauren] I'm so nervous. - [Kylee] I'm so nervous. - [Megan] Okay, when I say one, you can open, alright? So, three, two, two and a half, one! Open. - Oh my god! - Oh my god! - [Lauren] Like, I'm in shock right now. I didn't know it could look like this. - [Megan] Oh my god, you're crying! - [Kylee] I'm like freaking out. - This is amazing. - [Megan] You're so sweet. You like it? - Yeah! Oh my god, it's a amazing! Oh my god. - [Megan] Let's take a look at these panels. Remember, these are what we did together. These luan panels that we stained, and the best part is, when you leave, they just pop off. We didn't have to drill any holes. You don't have to patch anything. They just, peal 'em, and they come unstuck. And you can put them up somewhere else, too. Your wine rack's finally hung. - [Lauren] Look at our couch! - [Megan] This is your couch! And this is your couch, too. We took off the back, so it's like a chaise lounge now. - [Lauren] That's so cool! - [Megan] There are no more DIY mishaps. - [Kylee] It looks so much better. - It's nice and comfy and cozy, and you don't have to cover it up with a blanket. - [Lauren] No more blanket, and no more little pieces of fake leather all around our apartment. - And you can still see your rug. Like, this really shines now. It doesn't get lost in everything. - [Kylee] I love the color scheme, and everything. I really didn't think I was gonna cry. I didn't think I would so overwhelmed with how amazing the space ended up looking. It really does feel like we've evolved from, like, early young twenties, recent post grad, to, like, an actual later twenties, we're adults now, and this a real living space. - [Lauren] I can't verbalize how impressed I am with this. It feels like home, it doesn't feel just like a place that we're staying for a year or two, which is huge. - [Megan] I'm gonna leave you just to enjoy the space. - Thank you so much! - Thank you so much! - Enjoy, and invite me back, and we can like hang out. - [Kylee] Absolutely. - [Lauren] Come over and drink some of our wine, now. - Girl, I'm comin' back. Bye. - [Kylee] Bye. - [Lauren] Bye.
