Halloween Spooky Window Cookies

Sugar Fix - "Tricks & Treats"


  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 3 1/4 cups All purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp Gel Black food colouring
  • Orange Hard Candies, crushed
  • Optional Royal Icing:
  • 1.5 tbsp meringue powder
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp warm water
  • Gel Black food colouring


  1. Preheat your oven to 350˚F. Beat the butter, sugar, molasses, food colouring and spices on low speed for a couple of minutes. Add the flour and mix until it forms a nice dough. Roll out the dough (1cm thin) and cut out the 4”x4” square windows re-rolling the scraps.
  2. Place the rectangles on a baking sheet covered in parchment and before placing it in the oven cut out the window openings using a small square cookie cutter. Bake for 9 minutes and then add the crushed hard candies into the window openings. Bake for another 5 minutes until the candy is melted and then remove from oven and let cool completely. The candy may have bubbles in it but they will pop themselves.
  3. Make the royal icing by combining the sugar, meringue powder and water. Beat for 7-10 minutes until stiff. Add water for desired consistency. Dye the icing black and place in a piping bag with a thin tip. Pipe cob webs and designs as you like. Let set for 15 minutes.
