- Hey guys, my name is Emmy, and I'm eating my way across Japan in the most unlikely way. I'm on a quest to discover Japan's unique Kit Kat flavors from Tokyo's rum raisin to Shizuoka's wasabi. I'm tasting, exploring, and unwrapping what each region has to offer. This is the flavor of Tokyo, rum raisin Kit Kats. This box cost about $20, and there's 12 little bars inside, so it's rare and difficult to find, and they're super expensive, so let's give them a taste. Ah, and they're white. They're not chocolate. And I immediately smell the rum scent of it. Nice, so inside it looks like it has a little bit of a wafer cookie, and let's give it a taste. Here we go. It's got a really strong alcoholy rummy flavor to it. It actually goes really well with the sweetness of the outside. I feel like the predominant flavor of this is rum. I don't really taste any raisin. I think kind of dried fruit flavors, but definitely nice and rummy and kind of butterscotchy. So now I've tasted the rum raisin Kit Kat, and now I have a better sense of what rum raisin tastes like but I still don't really get the connection of rum raisin and Tokyo, so let's see if I can go explore Tokyo and find out. So I think there's an appreciation of something that comes from this specific region and has this specialty, so it seems to be natural that something like a Kit Kat flavor from this area would work. You can't find these Kit Kat flavors anywhere else in the world, only in Japan, so I think that does say something about the culture and its appreciation and why Kit Kat as a company has determined that they can only sell it here. Why don't they sell rum raisin in the US? I don't know. I guess this is what we're going to find out. Alright, so we're going to go to the BumBun Blau Cafe, and apparently they have a special kind of shaved ice which is called kakigori that has rum raisin on top. It's supposed to be some sort of specialty, but I've never had either one. I've never had kakigori, and I've never had rum raisin, so it should be an adventure on both parts. So here it is, the Bun Blau Cafe. Let's see what's inside. Ah look, it's the kakigori sign! Kakigori, kakigori, so these signs are super iconic, you can see them at festivals and fairs, and when you see them, you know that's where you can get your shaved ice, kakigori ozu. Alright, so let's go in. Hi, nice to meet you. Thank you so much for having me. The rum raisin, you're going to show me how? Great, I'd love to see! Ah, wow! That's so great! Look at that. Is this the milk, cream? What's this? - [Employee] Rum raisin. - Do you make the sauce here? So you're building it bigger. Wow, it's beautiful. Okay, Saipte-san, this looks lovely. Mmmmm. That's great, it's so light. It just melts in your mouth. It's like snow. The flavor's really good too. A little bit of rum, a little bit of sweetness and milky, but the best part is the texture. It just melts in your mouth. Delicious, nice job. So this is your invention? It's very creative. I like the subtle taste of the rum, and then there's the sweetness of the raisin, and it looks like a lot, but it's not that much. It actually just kind of settles down. So when I think of rum raisin, I think of it more of a Western thing, so how do you think it came to Japan? But it's a very popular flavor here in Japan. A lot of people enjoy it. So I'm headed over to Ogawaken Patisserie to learn more about a little curious pastry called raisin wich, and I'm going to meet Soguru-san who's going to tell me more about it. Wow, so beautiful! Okay rum raisin wich. Look at this, it's so beautiful. Really really good. The cookie is buttery and soft and flaky and sweet, but not too sweet, and the filling is just lovely. You've got the big fat raisins. They're juicy! And then you've got this lovely cream that's very creamy without being overly sweet. It's just delicious, and you can taste the rum too. I heard about your raisin which so I'm trying to learn more about why rum raisin and why in Japan and why in Tokyo. Mm, I see. How long as the bakery been here? Has this cookie been offered since 1905? - 40 years ago. - Ah, okay so 40 years ago. How did rum raisin flavor come to Tokyo? Ah so it's very, there's a sense of refinement when it comes to these flavors. You've got the fresh cream, you've got the rum and the raisins that come all the way from California, and you've got the rich buttery cookie, so it represents a sense of luxury. It's kind of strange because you never think of bars kind of tucked up in here, but totally typical. Just little holes in the wall everywhere. So in a typical Japanese fashion, this tiny bar only has seats for 10 people but has over 200 types of rum. And if you ask me, it's the perfect way to end a day of celebrating rum. When I think of rum, I think of really bad rum, and this is really amazing. So in terms of flavor, what are the kind of the range of flavors? How is it usually served? Is it served like whiskey on the rocks, or is it usually cocktails? Look at this glass! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh, I love this. I've never seen a glass like this before. Rum only? I'm going to break it. Alright, I'm going to sit down and have more to drink. Mm, that goes down quick and easy, and it affects you quick and easy. I think when a lot of people think of Tokyo or have an image of Tokyo, I think it might be something as this and to actually see it and experience it is pretty otherworldly. It's like a scene out of Blade Runner or something. It's really amazing, and to see it from this kind of a distance is kind of interesting too because there's this separation. You can't really hear it, but you can kind of see it unfold like television or like a game or something. It's really amazing.
