- [Alejandro] My name is Alejandro and traveling is what I do. I'm taking The Good Truck across California to discover some extraordinary organizations and the people behind them. It's time we recognized the individuals that make it all happen. With the help of local chefs and our mobile kitchen, we're giving thanks, one meal at a time, to the good people who make their communities a great place. This is The Good Truck. Today we're headed into Carlsbad, California. The locals call it the Village by the Sea. And, while it's a great place for tourists to visit all year round, there's still a strong sense of community here. A big part of that is found at The Boys And Girls Club which provides a safe place for kids to learn, play, and grow after school. So I'm going to volunteer for a day and then go meet up with an incredible local chef to help give back to the staff by surprising them with a delicious meal and an amazing view. So here we are! The Boys And Girls Club. Abby? - Abby. Nice to meet you. This is Liz and this is Andy. - [Andy] Welcome to The Boys And Girls Clubs. - Thank you very much. What do you guys do here? - I am the Program Director here. - Okay. - I run the teen programs. - Overall Director. - And, what is The Boys And Girls Club? - [Andy] Boys And Girls Club is a fun and safe place for kids to go afterschool and all day in the summer. We'll build them good character so that we end up having good adults come out of our program. - We have probably about 40 middle schoolers that come every day. - They teach everything from cooking to athletics. Art club, we have science clubs. You name it and we have a club for it. - Well, I would like to offer myself as a volunteer for today. - Great! - [Alejandro] Thank you very much! - [Abby] So this is our middle school room. - [Alejandro] Awesome! - [Abby] This is Mr. Prince and this is Ms. Sadie. - Nice to meet you. - Hello, nice to meet you. - So, what is it that you guys do in here? - [Prince] We do a lot of different things, but mostly we try to have fun. - We really try to give these kids a little flavor taste to give everything the world has out there for them. - [Alejandro] Were you ever a part of it as well? - Yeah, I actually grew up going to The Boys And Girls Club in Indio. Whenever I could get there, that was where I wanted to be. - And that's what made you want to come back again and... - [Prince] Oh yeah, definitely. It's what made it an easy decision to give back. - There's a little picture of Prince as a kid at The Boys and Girls Club right over there. Right there is Mr. Prince. - Aw, that's him? - Not in his Club t-shirt. - So this is our lovely front desk. - [Alejandro] Nice to meet you guys. - I look forward to coming to work every day. I really do. And I don't think that there are a lot of people that can say that about their jobs. - All right, well, this is our beautiful gym. - It is beautiful. I'd love to participate in this part as well. - [Abby] This is Alejandro. He's gonna be on your team. - [Alejandro] What's up? - This is a place that the whole community's involved which is a cool feel because everybody is like, "Oh, this is my place. "This is my building and I feel home here." - Hi, nice to meet you. Alejandro. - Nice to meet you, I'm Nick. - Hi, my name's Alyssa. - [Alejandro] What do you guys do here? - [Nick] We work in the afterschool program over at Carlsbad high school. - But it's still a part of The Boys And Girls Club? - It is. We're there for guidance, mentorship. - Have you ever felt that you've really made a difference in someone? - We know that that's our role is let's sit down and listen to you and see what you need to work through. - I just look at this as a program I wish I had had to lean on when I was growing up. - You see yourself working here for a while? - Oh, yeah. Definitely. - Guys, so we have a super special guest for cooking club today. His name is Alejandro. Do you guys want to tell him what you're gonna make in cooking club today? - [Children] We're making quiches. - [Abby] All right! - Grab a pinch of butter and then just rub it all around. All around it, like this. - [Girl] I love dough. - Perfect. Take your flower and go ahead and put it into the pan. There you go! The center of it's gonna be the filling. - [Alejandro] Awesome! - So just put one little spoonful in it and see if you can make it in the middle of the flower. - For me? - Yeah. - Thank you, man. - It's a place that the kids just love to be. You can hear it outside right now. - [Alejandro] Yeah. - [Liz] It's just a lot of happy energy because they're done with school and they get to be here. - [Alejandro] Exactly. - It's cool to grow into a good citizen and a good adult once you leave here. - Abby, thank you so, so much for everything today. - [Abby] It was really fun having you here. - [Alejandro] Tomorrow, we have a surprise for you. - [Abby] Great! - [Alejandro] Awesome. - All right, I'm gonna get back to it. - Please do. - See you later. - Bye bye. What an amazing time. I truly connected with the people. They were genuinely happy with the job they're doing so I'm so excited to go to Campfire, meet with Chef Andrew, and get something ready for them. - My name's Andrew Bachelier. I'm the Executive Chef of Campfire Restaurant in Carlsbad, California. What is truly unique about the Campfire kitchen is that we're trying to control live fire using different types of elements of that. Smoke, wood, embers, ash. And a lot of our woods that we do use comes from local farms. It's a brand-new restaurant. The owner, John Resnick, has had the idea of it for a couple years now. - I live 10 minutes away from here. These are communities that I really care about and that I felt had some room for some more hospitality destinations. - My philosophy would be just keep it very simple. I like to focus on maybe one or two ingredients per dish and really highlight those ingredients. What we focus on is produce from local farms. Lots of seafood locally sourced. We know where everything's coming from and how it is til it touches our table. - We talk a lot about community. It's one of the first things that we stress about who we are and what we do. Everybody that comes through the doors, we want them to feel like they are welcome here and that they belong here. - Food and community goes hand in hand. So that's the whole idea of Campfire. We're celebrating the spirit of the campfire. - Gathering together with friends and loved ones and sharing cool experiences, that's the same thing that we want this restaurant to be. - The guys at The Boys And Girls Club, I spent the whole day with them. They're awesome, but they don't know exactly what's going on. - Oh, we're fired up. We've been talking about it for two weeks, so we're ready to rock. - Oh, man! Let's go see the truck. - [Andrew] Let's do it. - We're about to welcome the staff of The Boys and Girls Clubs to take them for an amazing brunch because we want to give back to them today. Hi! - Hi! Good to see you! - Way to go! - What? This is crazy! You got a party van? - [Alejandro] Everybody ready? Everybody excited? We have something real special prepared. - [Staff] Yay! - [Alejandro] Let's go! Well, come in. Welcome, welcome. - All righty. So this is The Good Truck. - Nice. - Okay, because we wanted to give back to you, we prepared a really nice meal for you guys. So, welcome, and thank you very much! Let's go! Welcome, welcome! - So awesome! - Wow! - Oh, wow! - Oh, my goodness! - [Staff] Wow! - Welcome, take a seat wherever you'd like. This is all yours. Everybody feel comfortable? I truly believe investing in children is the smartest thing you can do. I see the passion in all of you guys. We felt it in the environment yesterday. What you do has a great value. So this is our way to say thank you and just disconnect for a little bit, have fun, and enjoy! This is the amazing crew of Campfire and Chef Andrew. - We've got an awesome menu planned for you guys. I hope you guys enjoy. We have a fig port, hot smoked, cold smoked. Literally coming into right here. - [Woman] These are fire-roasted carrots. - Oh, this is amazing. It's so good to get them to get together and relax and bond and take the work that they do with the kids, which is hard work, and be able to put it aside for a bit and just relax and enjoy each other. - It's really touching to see that somebody wants to take the time to appreciate what we're doing. I mean, this is a great bonding experience for all of us, obviously. It's a chance to see our personalities outside of work. To get something like this is certainly unexpected and also no words. - [Woman] So this is a local spiny lobster. We made a grilled cheese for you. - [Man] Oh, my god! - [Woman] Please enjoy, yeah. - [Alejandro] That's for this half of the table only, okay? - It's great. I'm enjoying the meal, very relaxing. Kinda wondering how we're all gonna go back to work after this. - Oh, my goodness. This is over the top. Over the top. - [Woman] This is a fig wood smoked Mary's chicken. - [Alejandro] Thank you so much. - [Man] We're finishing off with some s'mores today as well. - [Staff] Yeah! - [Man] Because, come on! - [Man] You're roasting your own smores, so, yeah. - [Alejandro] Thank you guys very much. - This is a treat. All these guys work really, really hard every day and so, to see them get to experience something like this is awesome. - Well, guys, thank you very much for coming. It feels amazing to do something special for people who do so much for their community. So, thank you very much. Thank you, thank you. What an amazing experience all around. And now, we're off in The Good Truck. I can't wait to see where we'll go next.
