- So many good things in there. - I know, right, it smells so good. - I just wanna dive in. -Don't dive in. - More of a hot tub than a pool. - Yeah, right. - [Laura] Hi, guys. I'm in beautiful Laurel Canyon to visit the studio of my friend Kari Jansen. Kari cultivates and forages native plants in order to make her line of organic body care products called Poppy and Someday. I'm here to learn how to make a lip balm and a body salve and I cannot wait. Hi, how are you? - How are you? - I'm so excited to be here. - Welcome. - This place is so dreamy. When can I move in? Is this where all the magic happens? - This is where all the magic happens and where I create. And today I'm making a calendula-lavender salve and some lip balm. So we could go up to my back yard and we could wild craft and get some lavender and calendula. - That sounds amazing. Let's do it. - Okay, awesome. - Wow, what a great garden! - Awesome. - I love it. - So this is lavender. And this is our calendula. We'll just collect as much as we can and then we'll dry them and then we can add them to our oil. - Cool. Okay, what's next? - So I'm gonna wash these. We can just place them on the drying rack. - Cool. Just like drying fruit or something. - Yeah, you can place each of them in here. The one thing I really love about doing calendula and lavender as a little combo is that they love to grow by each other. And they're very gentle. Both very great antiseptics and skin healers. - This is gorgeous. - Yeah, that's beautiful. Oh, yum, smell, so good. - Oh, my God. - Yeah, so now we just put olive oil in there. - Just straight in? - Yeah, yeah, okay, beautiful. So we're gonna put it in the sun and let it infuse. - Oh, it looks so gorgeous. - Oh, it is so pretty. - So how long will it sit there? - You infuse it for two weeks. The sun in L.A. is pretty intense so I probably will move it in and out, maybe put it in a shadier spot. And then this one has been infused, so we're gonna take this one and strain it. This is just a cut-up sheet, but you could use a cheesecloth if you want. That's okay, you can keep pouring. - Is that all right? Okay. - Okay, now pick up all the sides. - This is like making a nut milk. - Yeah. - And then just squeeze through? - Yeah. So next we need some beeswax, some shea butter, some coconut oil and some coco butter. - [Laura] I want to eat all of them. -You could. Everything you put on your body you should be able to eat. - [Laura] Yes. - [Kari] And I wait for this to melt a little bit. So now you pour the calendula-lavender oil in here. So you're gonna take the mixture and you're gonna slowly pour it into each container. When we add the essential oils, which we'll do next, we don't wanna do it when they're super hot, 'cause it will burn out, like the lavender. Because you can see it's a little opaque on the bottom. - Right, so that's just where it's solidifying. - Okay, so now it's time to add the essential oils in. So we're gonna do three drops of ylang-ylang. Ylang-ylang is really nice, has a beautiful floral scent. So the next is the lavender. - Okay. - And 20 drops. - [Laura] Okay. We already infused the oil with fresh lavender now we're adding this to that. - Yeah, yeah, add a little more to give the anti-microbial and calming effects. Lavender is very medicinal and relaxing in calming our nervous system. Three drops of chamomile. Chamomile has such a great smell. It's like unique, sweet, and I always put it on top so that's like the first smell you smell in the layering, yeah. - Cool. - [Kari] Turn them a little bit, help mix it up. And now we just let them dry. - So what would you use this for? - You use this as an overall body salve. You can use it instead of a lotion when you get out of the shower. For the herbal lip stain these are the two ingredients, alkanet root and beetroot, that bring the color of this beautiful scarlet red. So this is the oil that I've already infused with the alkanet root and beetroot, so you have the beautiful color. - Oh, my God, weird. - The alkanet root and the beetroot have been in the bottom infusing. - That's just beet root, like dried and ground up? - Dried and ground up, yeah. And I tend to use a sheet because I like that it pulls out more of the powder, otherwise you're gonna get a lot of that gritty powder in the lip balm and nobody wants that. Great, and we'll let that melt down just a little bit. So now it's ready, if you wanna take it and slowly pour it. - Oh, I love that smell. It kind of like-- You don't smell it at first-- It like sneaks up on you. - So I use coriander. I picked coriander and peppermint. Coriander is more heating and peppermint is cooling and they both help with digestion. Everything that you put on your lips is the start of your digesting process. Perfect. And then you can put the caps on each one. - I love the colors. - So pretty. - Ooh, they look so sexy in their little containers. I love these so much. I can't believe we made these. - Yeah, you did it. And now you get to keep them! - Really? - Oh, yeah, definitely. - My God. So why is it called Poppy and Someday? - 'Cause poppy emanates like a bright yellow happy flower and I wanted that joy feeling of happiness. And Someday, like, why not today? - Oh, that's so sweet, I love that. Well, thanks for having me. - Yeah, thank you. - This has been so dreamy. I want to be here every day. - I want you here every day - That would be an ideal lifestyle for me, actually. - Well, thank you for coming. - Thanks for having me.
