- Hey guys, Julie here, and today I wanted to show you three easy ways to upgrade your box cakes. Now I'm not better than box cake, I'm not better than box icing. Sometimes you're in a pinch, you gotta use it, but here's three ways to get away with it. Number one, if you are anything like me you cannot get the top of your cake flat, so I love this tip. First thing you're gonna do is get your design sorted. So whatever you want. You wanna do some letters? You wanna so some pictures? I've chosen to do a couple of emojis. This is for a very special occasion. This is more of like a break up cake, or like my reaction to unsolicited dick pics cake. There's a cake for every occasion. So once you've printed out your template, you're going to wanna draw a pencil circle around it, in the same size as your cake tin. Then place a piece of waxed paper over top and start filling in all of the details. So I've got my store bought icing, which I've dyed into multiple colors, and placed in Ziplock bags. That's an extra step. You don't have to do that, but it's definitely gonna make it a little more accurate. Now I'm going to fill in everything except the black outline. Now I notice that any of those black scribblers that you can buy from the grocery store, they don't actually freeze very well, and what's important is that we get this entirely frozen so we can just kind of pancake it onto our cake at the end, and peel off the waxed paper. So, we're gonna leave all the black details 'til later. Once you've filled in everything, it's ready to go in the freezer. And this'll take about two hours to solidify. Give you plenty of time to cook and cool the cake, and just chill out, just live your life. I hate myself for saying that. All right, once your cake is cooked and cooled, you are going to want to level it off and then get stackin'. So I've got more of that great, just solid store bought icing. I don't know what's in it. To be honest, I don't recognize any of the ingredients but I love to eat it. We're gonna layer three of these adorable little cakes on top of each other, with a generous helping of icing in between. And then I'm going for this naked cake look, so I'm gonna put a little bit of icing around the outsides and then I'm gonna scrape it away, and that's gonna reveal some of the cake underneath. Perfect, so this just has to chill out. I want that icing to kind of harden up a little bit, so it's gonna go in the freezer for 10 minutes. Once the icing is a little bit firm to touch, you're ready to pancake your design on top. So with a one, two, three, flip it over, and then gently, ever so gently, peel off that waxed paper. The icing is going to wanna stick, but you're gonna wanna take your time, go slow, and it will eventually peel all the way off. A perfect cake for all those times that you open your Snapchat and you're like, ew, snap from my friend. And it's just a dick! And you're like, I hate it. I know you think that looks good, but I hate it. All right, on to the next design. Very, very simply we are gonna once again level off our funfetti box cake, that's my favorite flavor. And we are going to get it stacked and crumb coated. Let that chill in the fridge. Now for this design you're going to need different colors. So I've got my store bought icing and I'm going to dye it in three different colors that I think look really cute together. Then I'm gonna place those in piping bags, and now you're ready to pip onto your cake. So you wanna pipe, I was gonna say loonie sized amounts, but you don't know what that is. About this big. I'm Canadian, so. Then you're gonna drag a spoon across the dollop to make a design. Repeat that around the entire cake, alternating the colors, making sure that you don't use the wrong spoon color for the wrong color, 'cause it's not gonna make it look as clean. And you wanna do that to the top. Now, lastly I have prepared a fun little decoration. This is a cake that goes just out to all of my friends, and any boyfriend I've ever had and every family member I have. I'm sorry I ate your fries, but I did, I probably did. If you know me, I probably have eaten your fries at some point in time. So this one's for you. All right and last but not least we are going to move onto another gorgeous design. We have a lovely chocolate cake that has been leveled off. We're gonna stack it, ice it, get that crumb coat on, and then chill it. Now I love, love, love this design. This is my absolute favorite one. So once your cake is chilled, you're gonna bring it back out and you're gonna cover it in icing, just cover it in a thick layer of icing, all over. You can smooth it out, but don't be precious about it, because the next thing you wanna do is take a spoon and you're going to drag it in a kind of a snail pattern. What is that? Oh, spiral! In a spiral around the top of the cake as well as the sides. And it gives this really, really beautiful, kind of like textured pattern. I absolutely love it! Then as the final touch, totally optional, I am a sucker for drip cakes. I know that this isn't gonna be the perfect drip cake 'cause it's not perfectly clean lines, but it looks good all the same. So I've got a beautiful chocolate ganache that is just heated ever so slightly, so it's nice and runny. And I'm going to drip it down the sides using a squeeze bottle. And this cake, for this occasion goes out to anybody who's ever lent me a tampon. You deserve a cake. You were there in my time of need. I was havin' a rough day and you we're like, you stepped up to the plate. So thank you! You guys, what are your weird special occasions that you wanna make a cake for? If you do any of these, please take a picture and send it to me or tag @tastemade. Thank you so much for watching. I hope you like this video, bye!
