90's Pop-Tarts
It doesn't get more 90's than Nutella filled pop-tarts with funky 90's patterns on top.
Ingredients
90's pop tarts
- 2 cups (200 grams) plain flour or all purpose flour (see tip below)
- Pinch of salt
- 4 ounces (110 grams) butter, cubed or an equal mix of butter and lard
- 2 to 3 tablespoons very cold water
- 200g Nutella
Royal Icing
- 450grams powdered sugar
- 2 egg whites
- 1 drop blue food gel
- 2 drops pink food gel
- 1 drop green food gel
- 3 drops black food gel
- 2 drops yellow food gel
Steps
90's pop tarts
- Place the flour, butter and salt into the bowl of the processor.
- Using only the pulse setting, pulse until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Avoid over mixing if you can.
- Through the funnel on the top of the processor, slowly add the water a little at a time until the mixture comes together in a ball.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap (plastic wrap) and chill for a minimum of 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes.
- Once the dough has chilled thaw out of the fridge for 20 min and place on top of a large sheet of baking paper. Place another sheet of baking paper on top and flatten with the heel of your hand a little before rolling with a rolling pin. Roll to about 5 mm in thickness
- Cut rectangle shapes out and place a tablespoon of Nutella on top. Spread out evenly, leaving some bare pastry on the outsides before placing the second rectangle of pastry on top. Use a fork to crinkle the edges out. Bake for 12 minutes on 160C (320F). Let them cool completely.
Royal Icing
- While the pop tarts are cooling, prepare the Royal icing by adding the powdered sugar and egg whites into a large mixing bowl. Whisk until very well combined. To thin out to piping consistency add ½ tsp water, mixing each time until you get a thin enough mixture to pipe.
- Split into 5 bowls. Colour one, black, blue, green, pink and yellow.
- Add to piping bags and pipe ‘90s patterns on top. For inspiration you can use the patterns I used in the video or just google ‘90s kids fashion!
