Apple Butter Scones

These buttery scones are flavored with apple butter and kissed with a warm maple glaze.

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed and chilled
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup apple butter
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon + sugar mix, for the top
  • For the glaze:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 8 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add one egg at a time and mix. Then add buttermilk and apple butter. Mix well. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet, and mix just until combined.
  3. Pour mixture onto a floured surface. Use your hands or a roller to form a disk. Cut into slices, like triangles, and place on a parchment-lined baking tray. Brush the tops with buttermilk and sprinkle cinnamon sugar.
  4. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until crusty and golden brown. Meanwhile, make the glaze by combining all ingredients in a bowl.
  5. Remove scones from oven and place on a wire rack. Allow to cool for about 5 minutes, before adding the glaze on top.
