Caramel Waffle With Apple Compote

Add some smooth caramel and crispy apples to your waffles for a truly groundbreaking start to the morning.


  • Waffle batter:
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 package dry active yeast
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk, warm
  • 1 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • Store-bought caramel sauce
  • Apple compote:
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and diced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick


  1. Combine water, yeast and sugar in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. In a medium bowl stir together flour, baking soda, and a pinch of salt, set aside.
  3. In a large bowl whisk together eggs, butter, milk, vanilla and honey. Slowly add dry mixture to bowl stirring after each addition just until combined. Add yeast mixture to bowl, stir to combine and set bowl aside in a warm place to rest.
  4. Combine all compote ingredients over medium heat until apples are tender, about 20 minutes.
  5. With the waffle iron set to medium heat, place 1/4 cup of batter into the center of the iron followed by a drizzle of caramel sauce. Top with another 1/4 cup of batter and cook the waffles until golden and crispy, about 5 minutes.
