Cheddar Apple Bacon Grilled Cheese Rolls

This sweet and salty combo may seem odd, but it's deep-fried and ridiculously yummy.

  • For the rolls
  • 1 apple, cored
  • 10 slices white bread, crusts removed
  • 1/4 cup whole-grain mustard
  • 10 slices cheddar cheese, thinly sliced
  • 10 slices bacon, crisped and chopped fine
  • For breading
  • All-purpose flour
  • Egg wash
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying
  • Mustard aioli
  • 1/4 cup whole-grain mustard
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  1. Preheat pot with oil to 350°F.
  2. Slice apple into matchsticks, about 1 inch by 1/4 inch. Set aside.
  3. Using a rolling pin, roll bread slices until thin. Slather one side with mustard, followed by a cheese slice, a few apple sticks, and some chopped bacon. Roll from bottom to top. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
  4. Dip sticks into flour, egg wash, then breadcrumbs. Freeze for 5-10 minutes until firm but not frozen.
  5. Mix together all aioli ingredients and set aside.
  6. Fry rolls in batches until golden brown on all sides, and serve with mustard aioli.
  7. Tip: After grilled cheese rolls are breaded and fried, freeze for a quick snack at a later time! Simply thaw at room temp for 5 minutes and microwave on high for 2-3 minutes.
