Donut Sugar Cookies

Donut-inspired frosted sugar cookies will be the cutest treat at your next party.

Donut Sugar Cookies


  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • Pinch of salt

  • Icing:

  • 8 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon meringue powder (optional)

  • Blue, pink and brown food coloring


  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

  2. In a mixer, cream butter with sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla.

  3. Mix flour, baking powder and salt; add to butter mixture slowly. Dough is ready when it's no longer sticking to the sides of the bowl. If too sticky, add 1-2 tablespoons of flour. Do not over mix.

  4. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Sprinkle a flat surface and the dough with powdered sugar. Roll dough out about 1/4-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter to cut into circles. Use a spatula to transfer cookies to baking sheet. Poke center of cookies with a straw to form the donut holes.

  5. Bake for 7-8 minutes.

  6. Make the icing. Mix all icing ingredients with a hand or stand mixer until slightly runny but not watery. If too watery, add more powdered sugar; too hard, add more water.

  7. Allow to cool slightly before icing. Garnish with sprinkles.
