From blow drying pizza to ironing a homemade quesadilla, here are 8 dorm room food hacks to help you survive college.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 8 large marshmallows
- 2 cups of your favorite cereal
Steps
- Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl.
- Once melted, add the marshmallows and microwave for about 20 seconds, depending on the strength of your microwave. Watch closely! The marshmallows will start to puff up; don’t let them go over the edge.
- Remove from the microwave (marshmallows will deflate) and stir the melted butter and marshmallows together until smooth.
- Mix in your favorite cereal and stir until well combined.
- If desired for shape, transfer it into another container. Let sit for 10 minutes.
- Once cool, you can pop it out, cut it up and enjoy...or it eat straight from the container!

- 1 butter patty, or 1 tablespoon butter
- Pre-sliced mushrooms
- Pre-chopped onions
- Spinach
- 3 eggs, beaten
- Mozzarella, shredded
- Salt
- Pepper
Steps
- Melt the butter in the bottom of the rice cooker.
- Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are slightly translucent.
- Add mushrooms and continue cooking.
- Add spinach and cook until slightly wilted.
- Mix in eggs, cheese, salt and pepper and stir until combined.
- Place the lid on for 5 to 10 minutes, until the frittata appears fully cooked. The edges should be firm and the top and bottom almost set.
- Use a spatula to transfer the frittata to a plate.
- Garnish with mozzarella cheese and enjoy!

- Pancake mix
- Chocolate chips
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate sauce
Steps
- Prepare pancake mix as package instructs. If you’re feeling fancy, add chocolate chips or whatever add-ins you prefer.
- Fill the bottom of a flat-bottomed bowl with mixture, filling it slowly until it reaches the edge of the bowl.
- Microwave it for 60 to 90 seconds, depending on the strength of your microwave.
- To test if it’s done, run the edges with a knife and make sure no liquid batter reveals itself.
- Top with whipped cream and chocolate sauce (or any toppings you’d like). Enjoy!

- 2 tablespoons butter, or 2 butter patties
- 1 tablespoon or 1 packet of sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- For the topping:
- 1 packet instant oatmeal, maple sugar flavor preferred
- For serving: Ginger snaps (crushed), vanilla ice cream

- Melt butter in the bottom of a rice cooker.
- Add apples and sugar. Let cook for a few minutes, until apples start to soften. Stir in cinnamon.
- Next, dump the oatmeal packet over the apple mixture.
- Place lid on top and let cook for 4 minutes, then stir to combine.
- Transfer to a bowl and top with smashed ginger cookies if using, followed by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Remember to turn off your rice cooker, then enjoy!

- 1 cup enchilada sauce, divided
- 5 flour, fajita-size tortillas
- 1 cup cooked chicken, chopped or shredded
- 1 cup finely shredded Mexican-style cheese
- To serve: Cilantro, sour cream, pico de gallo, hot sauce
Steps
- Spread 1/2 cup enchilada sauce into the bottom of a microwave-safe 8x8-inch baking dish; set aside.
- In a medium bowl, mix together chicken, 3/4 cup cheese and 1 packet of hot sauce if desired.
- Place tortillas on a clean work surface and fill with the chicken and cheese mixture. Wrap tightly and place into prepared pan. Repeat with remaining enchiladas.
- Top enchiladas with remaining cheese.
- Wrap glass pan loosely with plastic wrap and microwave for 5 to 7 minutes or until cheese has melted and enchiladas are cooked through.
- Serve with desired toppings.

- 1 flour tortilla
- 1/2 cup shredded Mexican-style cheese
- Black beans, canned
- To serve: Cilantro, sour cream, pico de gallo, hot sauce
Steps
- Heat up clothing iron.
- Place a sheet of aluminum foil in your work area, making sure it’s large enough to cover the tortilla once it’s been folded in half.
- Place the tortilla on the foil and top with cheese and beans on 1 side, then fold the tortilla in half. Wrap the foil around the folded tortilla.
- Place the iron on top of the quesadilla and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Flip the quesadilla over and continue to cook for another 3 to 4 minutes.
- Unwrap the quesadilla, cut as preferred and garnish with cilantro, sour cream and pico de gallo. Serve with hot sauce.
