- Fresh coconuts
- Heavy cleaver
- Protective glove
- Fill a large bowl with water, and place coconut in bowl. Make sure the coconut is covered with water; rotate it so all sides become soaked.
- Allow to sit for a minimum of 5 minutes to 30 minutes to allow the shell to become fragile.
- There are 3 significant lines on the coconut; these are the breaking points. Wear a glove on your non-dominant hand. This is the hand you will hold the coconut in.
- Using the back of the cleaver (the side that is not sharp), hit each line with force, rotate, and repeat until coconut breaks in half. Place a bowl under the coconut prior to cracking to collect any juice.
