Mini Onion Blossom Bites

  • 10 pearl onions
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper


  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/4 cup ranch
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped chipotle in adobo sauce
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped chives
  • Pinch of salt


Mini Onion Blossom Bites

  1. Preheat oil to 375 degrees.
  2. With a sharp paring knife, carefully cut off the non-root end of the onions. Make 8 to 12 small slits around the top of each onion, being careful not to cut all the way through. Use your hands to help separate the “petals”.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine all dry ingredients.
  4. Dip onions in egg, followed by the dry mixture.
  5. Carefully drop onions into oil and cook for 3 to 5 minutes. They will bloom as they cook.
  6. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
  7. In a small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients.
  8. Dip cooled onion blossoms in sauce and enjoy!
