Puppy Dog Cupcakes

Had a "ruff" day? Rectify it with these adorable and delicious cupcakes.

Ingredients

  • Buttercream:
  • 2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 cups confectioner's sugar
  • 12 cupcakes
  • Regular and mini chocolate chips
  • Pink starburst candy, flattened
  • Red heart candies, for the Yorkie's bow

Steps

  1. Make the buttercream: Beat the butter with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and mix until combined. Add the confectioner's sugar one cup at a time, then beat for 3-5 minutes, until fluffy. See the directions below for the colors of buttercream and piping tips needed for each dog.
  2. Boston Terrier: You will need black buttercream with a #102 and #3 piping tip and white buttercream with a #12 piping tip. Pipe some black buttercream with the #102 tip onto the surface of the cupcake and smooth with a knife. Pipe the ears with the black buttercream with the same tip and smooth. Pipe the white marking down the center of the face and two dollops for the whites of the eyes. Stick a chocolate chip into the center of each dollop. Draw the nose and mouth with the #3 piping tip. Attach a molded starburst candy for the tongue and the insides of the ears.
  3. Dalmatian: You will need white buttercream with a #12 piping tip and black buttercream with a #102 and #12 piping tip. Pipe some white buttercream onto the surface of the cupcake and smooth with a knife. Pipe the ears with the black buttercream and #102 piping tip. Pipe the nose with the white buttercream by piping a round dollop. Pipe spots with the black buttercream and #12 piping tip. Use 2 regular-sized chocolate chips for the eyes and a mini chocolate chip for the nose. Use a starburst candy for the tongue.
  4. Basset Hound: You will need dark brown buttercream with a #102 piping tip and white buttercream with a #12 piping tip. Pipe some brown buttercream onto the surface of the cupcake and smooth with a knife. Pipe the ears with the same buttercream. Pipe the white marking down the center of the face and smooth with a knife and pipe two dollops for the eyes. Stick a chocolate chip into the center of each dollop and use one for the nose.
  5. Bulldog: You will need white buttercream with a #12 piping tip, light brown buttercream with a #102 piping tip and black buttercream with a #2 piping tip. Pipe some white buttercream onto the surface of the cupcake and smooth with a knife. Create the wrinkly mouth with the white buttercream. Pipe the spots and ears with the light brown buttercream. Use the black buttercream to draw the nose and mouth. Use a starburst candy for the tongue and two chocolate chips for the eyes.
  6. Yorkie: You will need black buttercream with a #233 piping tip and light brown buttercream with a #233 piping tip and #102 piping tip. Pipe the forehead markings with the black buttercream and the cheeks, jaw and eye markings with the light brown buttercream and #233 piping tip. Pipe the ears with the light brown buttercream and #102 piping tip. Use 3 chocolate chips for the eyes and nose, starburst candy for the ears and red candies for the bow.
  7. Chihuahua: You will need light brown buttercream with a #102 piping tip. Pipe some buttercream onto the entire surface of the cupcake and smooth with a knife. Repeat to create the ears. Stick regular-sized chocolate chips for the eyes and a mini chocolate chip for the nose. Use starburst candies for the insides of the ears.
