Takoyaki Buns

This popular Japanese street food featuring octopus and cheese works perfectly inside a fluffy, steamy bun.

  • 6 frozen takoyaki
  • 6 pieces of octopus
  • Shredded cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Bread dough:
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon skim milk
  • 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2/3 cup water
  • Topping:
  • Okonomiyaki sauce
  • Mayonnaise
  • Dried green seaweed
  • Red pickled ginger
  • Bonito flakes

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine all dough ingredients. Transfer to a flat surface and knead by hand. Roll into a ball then place in oven at 100 degrees to proof for 30 minutes.
  2. Divide the dough into 6 pieces, and fill each piece with a frozen takoyaki, an octopus piece and some cheese. Wrap dough around filling to completely enclose. Place each ball in an aluminum muffin paper. Brush balls with beaten egg, and bake at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes.
  3. Add the toppings and enjoy!
