- Today I'm crossing off another item from my foodie bucket list as I try raw sugar cane for the first time. This is grown in so many parts of the world and if you've never heard of raw sugar cane this is basically what makes most granulated sugars. This is some raw sugar cane in turbinado form and this is all I've ever tried but I'm so excited because I get to try it in its pure, raw state. It's basically a perennial grass, kind of like bamboo, so it's really hard. Okay and in order to get to the inside you first gotta peal out the outer edge. I don't have all the expert tools that people use to break this down but I'm just gonna use my handy dandy chef's knife with a sturdy handle. If I had a machete, I would just go . But I don't, so I'm just gonna make the first cut and then kinda work my way down. I don't know why I'm scared. Oo, these look like really woody splinters. I'm gonna do my best not to get poked before I suck on them. I love watching videos of vendors around the world cutting these up, squeezing all the juice out them, it's satisfying. Ah-hah, this is too big of a piece to put in my mouth, I know, you don't usually hear me say that. I'm gonna cut it up into smaller chunks. You're not supposed to swallow this, okay, it's very fibrous, straw like so it could really hurt your throat. So you're supposed to chew down on it and suck all out the juice and then spit out the straw like fiber. Okay, moment of truth, I'm so excited, you have no idea how long I've wanted to try this. Okay. That was magical. That is not what I expected. I think in my mind, I connect the taste of sugar with something really, really sweet, right and syrupy, this is so refreshing. It's like sweetened elixir of life. I love the taste, I love how refreshing it is, but most importantly, I love the way it sounds. Now that I know what real sugar can tastes like I'm gonna take the sugar cane juice and use that to make a lemonade instead of using regular granulated sugar. Again, I don't have the proper tools or machinery to fully extract the juice but I'm gonna try to use this juicer and just see what happens. The fibers are flying. Oh, it's in my hair. I need a minute. Wow, so now, I'm just gonna mix this up with some lemon and a little mint and water and ice and then I'm gonna give it a try. Gonna mix the lemon juice with some water, add the sugar cane juice. A little bit of mint. Mix it up. Fill up a glass of ice. Some more mint and a sugar cane swizzle stick. Isn't that the most beautiful lemonade ever. Alright, got my metal straw, let's give it a try. That is how lemonade should be. Ho man, that is the most refreshing one ever, okay, best lemonade. Beyonce, is that you? Seriously makes me feel so alive, like I'm ready to try my next bucket list food, rattle snake, no that's not on my bucket list. Alright, see you next time, by!
