Van Gogh Starry Night Cake

Artistically decorated, this sweet masterpiece will definitely leave an impression.

Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • Yellow food coloring
  • Buttercream
  • 2 cups unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 cups confectioner's sugar
  • Blue, yellow and black food coloring

Steps

  1. Bake the cake: Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. In a separate bowl, beat the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and eggs and beat until combined. Add the dry ingredients in 2 additions, alternating with the milk. Dye the batter a bright yellow. Pour the batter into a 9' square baking pan and bake at 350F for 20-30 minutes, until fully cooked. Cool completely.
  2. Make the buttercream: Beat the butter with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and beat until combined. Add the confectioner's sugar one cup at a time, then beat for 3 minutes, until fluffy. Divide the buttercream into 5 bowls and dye it navy blue, light blue, yellow, black and white. The majority of the buttercream should be navy blue. Place all other colors of buttercream into piping bags and snip off the ends, creating round tips.
  3. Assembly: Slice the cake into 2 rounds and spread some navy blue buttercream onto one round. Top with the second layer and coat the entire cake in an even layer of navy blue buttercream. Use the white, light blue and yellow buttercream to create little dollops of color all over the cake to look like the sky and the stars. Gently smear the dollops with a butter knife to mimic brush strokes. Repeat with the black buttercream to create the buildings, smoothing with the knife to blur any sharp edges. Enjoy!
